Based in the School of Marine Science and Technology you will develop teaching materials linked to the National Curriculum in Science, Technology and Citizenship, that will be accessible to teachers nationally. These innovative materials will employ creative live web links to track cargo ships on worldwide voyages, as well as learning activities focusing on wider marine issues to inspire a new awareness of sustainable usage of the oceans. You will be involved in the delivery of pilot materials within secondary schools in Newcastle and London.

 

This project is part of a wider programme of educational and outreach activities within the School of Marine Science and Technology, the focus of which is to educate and empower people to relate positively to the marine and wider natural environment.  You will contribute by developing materials that engage young people in science learning, and to consider their own interaction with marine systems.  You will be committed to promoting science and technology teaching in schools, and you should have a degree (or equivalent) in marine technology, biology or other relevant subject.  A postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in a teaching or science communication environment is desirable. A high level of competence in written communication of scientific and technological concepts for the school-age audience is essential. Applicants will ideally be familiar with image processing packages and Web authoring software.
