"Women Don't Ask" - Wednesday 12th March 2008 @ 6pm
When Linda Babcock, a professor at a US university, asked why so many male graduate students were teaching their own courses and most female students were assigned as assistants, her dean said: "More men ask. The women just don't ask."
It turns out that whether they want higher salaries or more help at home, women often find it hard to ask. Sometimes they don't know that change is possible. Sometimes they fear that asking may damage a relationship. And sometimes they don't ask because they've learned that society can react badly to women asserting their own needs and desires.
Everything these days is negotiable! Every relationship – with your manager, colleagues, peer or direct report, partner, hairdresser, accountant, car mechanic, sibling, child or parent – is made up of daily, weekly and yearly negotiations. Therefore, learning how to negotiate effectively is a core life skill.
In this evening interactive session, you will learn:
- How to manage any emotional upset you may have over having to negotiate on your own behalf.
- How to identify your most common stumbling block and to pay attention to acts of self-sabotage.
- How to negotiate from a position of power (Power of Ideas, Power of Person).
- How to use the W.H.A.T. technique.
- How to make proposals that "get heard".
