SET For Work – Department for Education and Skills

SET For Work Network has been established with generous funding from the Department For Education and Skills.  This network brings together Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in England wishing to offer support and inspiration to female undergraduates and postgraduates in Science, Engineering and Technology subjects. In December 2004 13 grants of up to £15K were offered to HEIs and these funds are being used in a variety of creative ways to:

·Link female students with SET employers though mentoring programmes

·Introduce them to role models

·Offer peer support to those on male dominated courses

·Fund prizes and vacation projects

·Set up networks linking women in different institutions

The members of SET For Work come together at events co-ordinated by the UKRC to share ideas and good practice and receive support and training in, for example, how to run a mentoring scheme.

For a full list of the institutions involved in SET For Work and more details of each project, please go to www.setwomenresource.co.uk [home>mentoring>current projects>SET For Work]

Welcome to Mums in Science

This site has been designed as a portal for busy mums who work or have worked in science.

Too many women leave science due to the constraints of motherhood. Some struggle, and work part time, at the expense of advancing their career. Others change their career to fit in with their children, whilst working within some area of science.

Our aims are :-

  • to create a community to provide mutual support,
  • to provide information to those who have the challenge of bringing up children and maintaining a career in science, whether full or part time, or outside mainstream science.

This site is updated regularly with new articles and occasional special offers. Everything is accessible on the site. However, if you would like to receive notices of new additions to the site you can subscribe to the site and receive e-mails as soon as a new article is posted to your selected categories or to all the site.

We welcome comments about MumsinScience, what you like, what you don't like, or how we can improve.

PLEASE LET US KNOW, just email comments@mumsinscience.net
