View Article  Women scientists on the increase, but missing in business, finds report
In 2004, the percentage of women graduating at PhD/Doctorate level in the EU-25 stood at 43 per cent, an improvement on the situation in 1999, when the EU average was 38 per cent. It is also encouraging to note that this increase happened at a rate higher than that of men - seven per cent compared to two per cent among men. However, while the overall growth in the number of female graduates looks promising, the data for the percentage of women employed as scientists and engineers rings alarm bells. In 2004, women accounted for 44 per cent of the total EU labour force, and between 1998 and 2004 their participation rate had risen faster than that of men. In contrast, women made up only 29 per cent of those employed as scientists and engineers, with the growth rate in their participation rate between 1998 and 2004 increasing much more slowly than that of men: 0.3 per cent for women compared to two per cent for men.   more »

View Article  When Our Children Become Our Friends
Michelangelo once said that within every block of marble there is a great sculpture waiting to come out. I say the same about our children. When we receive them in the world, we don’t know what kind of beings they are and what their potential will be. Nevertheless, we act as Michelangelo, for, inside every parent, there is a sculptor of children. We know there is a great sculpture coming out; we only need to shape our marble block. We do this by teaching our children what we believe is right, by passing onto them our values, by feeding them the foods we think are the best, by providing them with the best possible education, by showing them our religious/spiritual beliefs, by directing them to the best friendships, by encouraging them to pursue hobbies and activities we deem important, and so on.   more »
View Article  Bacteriophage Applications - current and potential applications in biotechnology, agriculture and medicine - May 16th 2006, London UK
Bacteriophages are arguably the most abundant biological entities on the planet and they play profound roles in driving the adaptive evolution of their hosts, the bacteria. The meeting will cover various aspects of bacteriophage biology, including the nature of bacteriophages; their evolution and role in moving adaptive fitness genes between bacteria (for example in the generation of pathogenicity islands). The current and potential applications of phages in biotechnology, agriculture and medicine (including the prospects for “phage therapy”) will be discussed." - Professor George Salmond Cambridge University- the Meeting's Chair   more »

Welcome to Mums in Science

This site has been designed as a portal for busy mums who work or have worked in science.

Too many women leave science due to the constraints of motherhood. Some struggle, and work part time, at the expense of advancing their career. Others change their career to fit in with their children, whilst working within some area of science.

Our aims are :-

  • to create a community to provide mutual support,
  • to provide information to those who have the challenge of bringing up children and maintaining a career in science, whether full or part time, or outside mainstream science.

This site is updated regularly with new articles and occasional special offers. Everything is accessible on the site. However, if you would like to receive notices of new additions to the site you can subscribe to the site and receive e-mails as soon as a new article is posted to your selected categories or to all the site.

We welcome comments about MumsinScience, what you like, what you don't like, or how we can improve.

PLEASE LET US KNOW, just email comments@mumsinscience.net
