The focus of current outreach activities within the School, of which this project will form a part, is to inform, educate and empower people to relate positively to the marine and wider natural environment. The programme is underpinned by the philosophy that the natural environment belongs to all members of society, and effective sustainable management can only be achieved through engagement by an informed public. The programme aims to promote engineering and science learning in schools and to inspire a new generation of youngsters to think positively about marine-related careers.
You will be responsible for the development of teaching materials to be used nationally within schools at Key Stage 3 level, and for the early administration and marketing of the completed product. These materials will have a strong shipping and marine environment related focus, and will address learning objectives in Science, Design, Technology and Citizenship modules. You should have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant technological or biological field, an excellent understanding of the learning needs of Key Stage 3 pupils, and good written and oral communication skills.

Main Duties and Responsibilities To liaise with the PIs to decide on the project overview and product content. To liaise with science and technology teachers in local schools, and other appropriate educationalists, to establish learning requirements of relevant target groups. To develop and deliver classroom based activities in four secondary schools linked to the new National Curriculum requirements for Science, Design and Technology and Citizenship. To liaise with NYK staff to incorporate relevant and topical shipping issues into the product design. To produce high quality teaching materials (i.e ‘the product’) relating to shipping and the marine environment that will be accessible to teachers nationally. To liaise with web-development and teaching resource staff throughout the university in the development of innovative web-based teaching tools. To liaise with the printing design team in the design of advertising materials. To promote and advertise the products through distribution of materials, websites, and attendance at appropriate teaching conferences and networking events. (e.g. Science week, NESA) To carry out administrative duties associated with the launch and registration period of the website and teaching materials. |

Salaries
The University is committed to the principles of fairness and equality in all aspects of employment, including reward and recognition. The University policy is that new members of staff will normally be appointed up to the second or third points on the main salary scale. Appointments may be made further up the scale where it is deemed appropriate.
Pay progression is normally by the receipt of one annual increment up to the maximum point on the main salary scale for the grade. There is an annual review of salaries for all staff. Additional increments, and progression into the discretionary range beyond the maximum point on the main scale, may be awarded to members of staff demonstrating exceptional levels of contribution or performance.
The pay scales themselves are also reviewed annually, through a process of national bargaining.
Grade E:Salary: £21,050 - £24,403 per annum.
