Very Early Career Woman Physicist of the Year

The Women in Physics Group of the Institute of Physics is delighted to announce that the third annual £1000 prize, sponsored by Shell, will be awarded to the winner of the Very Early Career Woman Physicist of the Year at a special event on the afternoon of Wednesday 27th May.

The event will be in the Rutherford Lecture theatre at the IOP 76 Portland Place London. There will be light refreshments from 12.30 with a workshop on outreach beginning at 2pm, with speakers Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Dr Carolin Crawford and Dr Liz Ainsbury. Following a break for tea/coffee, the shortlisted candidates will present talks about their work at 4 pm, followed by the announcement of the winner and presentation of the prizes. The event will end by 5 pm.

The shortlisted candidates for the award have shown exceptional ability at both their research and outreach and are an inspiration.

The speakers for the workshop are all recognised for their outstanding work on outreach:

Carolin Crawford (Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge) was named as one of the Outstanding Women of Achievement this year, an honour also bestowed on Maggie Aderin-Pocock (founder and Managing Director of Science Innovation

Limited) in 2006, while Liz Ainsbury (Health Protection Agency) was the winner of the 2007 Very Early Career Woman Physicist. There will be opportunities to share in discussions on this important and multi-faceted topic and to share your views and experiences.

This event is open to all, whether members of IOP or not, whether physicists or not. It is not essential to register but it would be helpful if you would inform the WIPG Hon Treasurer, Carol Thompson, if you intend to come, in order to assist with estimates for refreshments (Email - carol.thompson@shell.com).

Welcome to Mums in Science

This site has been designed as a portal for busy mums who work or have worked in science.

Too many women leave science due to the constraints of motherhood. Some struggle, and work part time, at the expense of advancing their career. Others change their career to fit in with their children, whilst working within some area of science.

Our aims are :-

  • to create a community to provide mutual support,
  • to provide information to those who have the challenge of bringing up children and maintaining a career in science, whether full or part time, or outside mainstream science.

This site is updated regularly with new articles and occasional special offers. Everything is accessible on the site. However, if you would like to receive notices of new additions to the site you can subscribe to the site and receive e-mails as soon as a new article is posted to your selected categories or to all the site.

We welcome comments about MumsinScience, what you like, what you don't like, or how we can improve.

PLEASE LET US KNOW, just email comments@mumsinscience.net
