Mums in Science

This site has been designed as a portal for busy mums who work or have worked in any aspect of science.

Too many women leave science altogether due to the constraints of motherhood. Many others struggle to work part time, at the expense of advancing their career. More still change their career to fit in with their children whilst still working within some area of science.

Our aims are :-
- to create a community to provide mutual support,
- to provide information to those who have the challenge of bringing up children and maintaining a career in science, whether full or part time, or outside mainstream science, such as in scientific journalism.

BBC News is running the Ivan Noble Bursary again. This is a six-month contract available for an inexperienced science writer to come and work in our online team. Age is not an issue, but the post is aimed at someone who, in journalistic terms, is somewhat raw. Candidates are expected to be able to show a commitment to science writing/communication - obviously. They will also have been educated to degree level in a science subject. The applications process closes on Sunday.

In the language of developmental biology, an “embryo” arises with the appearance, on the surface of the growing ball of cells created following conception, of a feature known as the “primitive streak”. In effect, this is the point at which the cells display the characteristics of a vertebrate. In humans, this happens at about 14 days following fertilisation. Before then, the developing ball of cells is known as a “blastocyst”. The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act 1990 (the “Act”) made the word “embryo” include the blastocyst.

It’s the mentally tough who realize that every individual is the master of his or her own mind, not the other way around. The mentally weak are thrown around by every whim of their mind. Just because a thought arises, they assume it must be valid and worthy of dwelling on or obsessing over. This regurgitation of the same counter-productive thoughts causes needless pain, anxiety and depression. The mentally tough do not allow their own thoughts to be the cause of harm to themselves and others.
