The Shell and Institute of Physics Award for the Very Early Career Woman Physicist of the Year

The Institute of Physics, Women in Physics Group invites applications, from women physicists working in academia or industry, for the 4th annual Very Early Career Woman Physicist of the Year award. The award comes with a prize of £1000, donated by Shell. The winner will be expected to have experience in outreach to young people and non-scientists and will act as a role model for younger women (just starting work or tertiary education, or still at school).

Educational Card Games

A number of years have passed since the development of the ‘Voyager: Satellites’ educational card game reported in Physics Education in 2003. Since then, a large number of copies of the game have been produced and distributed across the UK, to a warm reception from both pupils and teachers. This article reports on some of the feedback received about the game over the five years of the project and gives some examples of how the game has been incorporated into the school curriculum. The recent development of other science related educational card games that are now available for use in schools is also discussed and it is hoped that this article will give inspiration to others to generate their own educational card games and enjoy some of the positive benefits of ‘playing’ in the classroom.

The UKRC went virtual in October when it launched its photo exhibition of the six women named '2009 Women of Outstanding Achievement in SET' at the island in Second Life run by Nature Magazine and MacMillan Publishing. The event also marked the opening for nominations for the 2010 UKRC Women of Outstanding Achievement Award (WoOA).

The event was packed out, with more than sixty avatars in attendance. Two 'WoOA' women spoke: Wendy Sadler, who runs Science Made Simple and has championed innovative forms of science communication, and Carolin Crawford, who works for the Institute of Astronomy and promotes astronomy to people of all ages.

SET Fair for a more Equal Future

UKRC launched the SET Fair Standard at the BT Tower on November 5th. The gender equality standard - piloted in 5 high profile businesses, organisations and colleges is expected to have a serious and positive impact for women in SET. UKRC will be extremely active marketing and promoting the standard during the coming months. The SET Fair Standard will help to build a culture of equality and progression amongst employers enabling businesses and organisations to become 'employers of choice' for women scientists, engineers and technologists.

Six CEO Charters, Chief Executives committing to gender equality, were awarded at the same event.
