Mums in Science

This site has been designed as a portal for busy mums who work or have worked in any aspect of science.

Too many women leave science altogether due to the constraints of motherhood. Many others struggle to work part time, at the expense of advancing their career. More still change their career to fit in with their children whilst still working within some area of science.

Our aims are :-
- to create a community to provide mutual support,
- to provide information to those who have the challenge of bringing up children and maintaining a career in science, whether full or part time, or outside mainstream science, such as in scientific journalism.

But don't forget that while you've outwitted the job market in the short term, you'll have to keep your eye on the long term too. That's right outwitting the job market is actually a career-long pursuit. As long as you're in the workplace, you'll have to plot and strategize ways of staying ahead. Fortunately, this isn't as hard as it sounds. The tips below are a good starting point for taking advantage of the opportunities your new job will offer-and creating a few opportunities of your own.

Planning a child`s birthday is never an easy process. What should be all `fairy cakes and balloons`, can quite easily descend into hours of monotonous pass the parcel wrapping, making up of party bags, and ringing around church halls or community centres, to try to secure the cheapest/trendiest/most convenient location. Furthermore, given the current economic climate, planning a child`s birthday party that is exciting and unique, albeit on a shoe string budget, can prove to be a real headache! There are however, some hints and tips and options, which can help you to cut costs, without looking like a skin flint!

"Huge technological advances have been made recently in the genomic and post-genomic analyses of pathogens and disease. To exploit these advances for the production of successful recombinant vaccines we need strategies to select appropriate molecules and to deliver them appropriately to stimulate protective immune responses. This meeting (which has CPD approval) will explore both candidate discovery and the tools for delivering vaccines effectively".
When our children share their problems with us, we need to empower them, instead of putting them down. However, sometimes we do not seem to know how to respond relevantly and appropriately when our childrens bring up their concerns to us. As a result, our children may feel discourage and soon stop sharing their hopes and fears with us.

The growth of the European Union has meant that travel between many European countries is very easy. Migration into the United Kingdom has increased greatly, and with this the need for people who speak these languages has grown greatly. Specific industries, such as the medical industry, have also meant that there is a greater need for specialist translation services.

"Once you can produce it in a flask, what next? The focus of this meeting will be on techniques for the bioproduction of usable quantities of biologic materials, specifically recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, cytokines viruses and other secreted cellular products from eukaryotic cells. Topics covered will include expression systems, mammalian vs. insect vs. other, constituitive vs. transient expression, cell culture medium considerations and culture devices for scale-up that can be used in any laboratory. This meeting should show the fastest pathway from discovery to proof of principle and the production of 100 mgs to several grams of product" Meeting Chair: Dr John J.S. Cadwell, President and CEO, FiberCell Systems Inc, USA. The meeting has CPD approval.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: TLRs (Toll-like receptors), NLRs (Nod-like proteins) and RLRs (RIG-like receptors), pathogens sensors of innate immunity

"Significant advances in our understanding of the innate immune recognition have been made in the last decade following the identification of three families of pattern recognition receptors: Toll-like receptors (TLRs), NOD-like receptors (NLRs) and RIG-I-like receptors (RLRs). TLRs are pattern recognition receptors that detect motifs or signatures from bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi. NLRs detect mainly intracellular bacteria and RLRs detect viral genome. These three families of pattern recognition receptors comprise the front line of defence that the host possesses against microbial pathogens. The aim of this meeting is to provide an overview of these three families of receptors and provide the most recent advances in the area of innate immune pattern recognition". Chairs: Dr Martha Triantafilou/Dr Kathy Triantafilou, University of Sussex, UK
